The traditional square of opposition is generalized and extended to a cube of opposition covering and conveniently visualizing inter-sentential oppositions in relational syllogistic logic with the usual syllogistic logic sentences obtained as special cases. The cube comes about by considering Frege–Russell’s quantifier predicate logic with one relation comprising categorical syllogistic sentence forms. The relationships to Buridan’s octagon, to Aristotelian modal logic, and to Klein’s 4-group are discussed.GraphicThe photo shows a prototype sculpture for the cube.

Im zehnten Buch seiner Confessiones befaßt sich Augustinus mit der Frage der Selbsterkenntnis oder mit der "Suche nach dem wahren Leben". Obwohl er davon ausgeht, daß jeder Mensch sich selbst besser kennt, als andere ihn kennen, hält er dafür, daß diese Selbstsicherheit kein Garant sein kann für das Gelingen eines guten Lebens, das für ihn - wir schreiben das Mittelalter - nur dann seine Erfüllung erlangt, wenn der Handelnde die moralischen Vorgaben einhält, die Gott dem Menschen gesetzt hat. Denn Augustinus (...) ist sich dessen bewußt, daß die Selbsteinschätzung des einzelnen unsicher und fehlerhaft sein kann und er eigentlich nicht in der Lage ist, sein eigenes Sein ganz erfassen zu können. Thema ist in 'Confessiones 10' daher die Suche nach der Antwort auf die Frage, wie der einzelne, dessen Würde gerade darin besteht, aus Freiheit und in eigener Verantwortung zu handeln, dazu gelangt, in seinem Handeln nicht rein egoistischen Interessen zu folgen, sondern das hohe Ziel zu erreichen, aus eigener Einsicht und eigenem Antrieb ein gottgefälliges Leben zu führen, will sagen: den von Gott gesetzten Geboten zu genügen. Nach Augustinus können lediglich die Menschen die göttliche Vollendung, auf die hin alle geschaffen sind, erlangen, die trotz ihrer Endlichkeit den Weg wohlwollender, nichtegoistischer Liebe suchen. Christus gilt ihm als Brücke, die von Gott zu den Menschen führt, sobald sie diesen - trotz ihrer Bedürftigkeit, Schwäche und Endlichkeit - den Weg zu einem Leben der "Heiligkeit" bahnt. (shrink)

​„Plessner in Wiesbaden“ schildert das Leben und Werk eines Philosophen und Soziologen (1892-1985), der das 20. Jahrhundert durchlebt, durchlitten und durchdacht hat. Ausgangspunkt ist das jüngere Interesse seiner Geburts- und Heimatstadt an dem großen Sohn der Stadt, das sich in der Stiftung eines „Wiesbadener Plessner Preises“ manifestiert. Vigil's socio-relational framework of sex differences in emotional expressiveness emphasizes general sex differences in emotional responding, but largely ignores the social context in which emotions are expressed. There is much empirical evidence showing that sex differences in emotion displays are flexible and a function of specific social roles and demands, rather than a reflection of evolutionary-based social adjustments.

The archive is the place for the storage of documents and records. With the emergence of the modern state, it became the storehouse for the material from which national memories were constructed. Archives also housed the proliferation of files and case histories as populations were subjected to disciplinary power and surveillance. Behind all scholarly research stands the archive. The ultimate plausibility of a piece of research depends on the grounds, the sources, from which the account is extracted and compiled. An (...) expanding and unstable globalizing archive presents particular problems for classifying and legitimating knowledge. Increasingly the boundaries between the archive and everyday life become blurred through digital recording and storage technologies. Not only does the volume of recordable archive material increase dramatically (e.g. the Internet), but the volume of material seen worthy of archiving increases too, as the criteria of what can, or should be, archived expands. What role does intuition play in making moral judgements? This question is becoming of key importance in the current debate on fundamentals in applied ethics. The difficulties begin in defining what intuitions exactly are. Another important question revolves around the role of intuitions in rational argument. In the 1880s and 1890s, performance played a significant role in the lives of the American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce (1839–1914) and his second wife, Juliette Peirce (185?–1934). Having moved to Milford, Pennsylvania, in April 1887, Charles and Juliette were still adjusting to country life. Milford, situated on the Delaware River among forests that seemed inexhaustible, had been settled by Hugenot immigrants whose French language and cultural influence were still strong. The computer simulation study explores the impact of the duration of social impact on the generation and stabilization of cooperative strategies. Rather than seeding the simulations with a finite set of strategies, a continuous distribution of strategies is being defined. Members of heterogeneous populations were characterized by a pair of probabilistic reactive strategies: the probability to respond to cooperation by cooperation and the probability to respond to defection by cooperation. This generalized reactive strategy yields the standard TFT mechanism, the All-Cooperate, (...) All-Defect and Bully strategies as special cases. Pairs of strategies interacted through a Prisoner's Dilemma game and exerted social influence on all other members. Manipulating: (i) the initial distribution of populations' strategies, and (ii) the duration of social influence, we monitored the conditions leading to the emergence and stabilization of cooperative strategies. Results show that: (1) The duration of interactions between pairs of strategies constitutes a crucial factor for the emergence and stabilization of cooperative strategies, (2) Unless sufficient learning intervals are provided, initializing the simulations with cooperative populations does not guarantee that cooperation will sustain.
